I'm a back bencher at the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board Meeting.
.....Meeting in Progress
Bret Stephens: "We need a specific plan to post the day after Trump clinches."
Kimberley Strassel: "Great Bret, a specific plan, a first for that candidate."
Joseph Rago: "Bret is right. Think of it this way, We can lose the candidate. We can lose the election. We can lose the Republican Party. We can lose the Country. Where do we take a stand?
Matthew Kaminski: "We take a stand now. We can't stop Trump. We can save the election, the Party and the Country."
Nancy deWolf Smith: "Great Matthew. Let's Hear Your Solution"
Holman Jenkins: "Let me try an idea. Premise 1. Trump wants to be President, and wants to give orders, but does not want to do the work. Premise 2. Trump is big on delegation. Premise 3. We need someone who knows the system, who is completely trustworthy, is a true conservative and has the detailed plans that Trump needs."
Hugo Restall: "Premise 5. We need someone who has been there before. Premise 6. All together now, Paul Ryan!"
Jason Riley: "And here's how we make it work. Trump agrees to one term. God knows that will be all that he can stand. And Ryan takes the VP job knowing that he runs for President in four years."
Holman Jenkins "And knowing that he starts implementing his programs on day 1 and knowing that Trump wants nothing more than to get the credit and win, win, win.
Kimberley Strassel: "This is the only way I could support Trump. But it's a brilliant idea. I make a motion to endorse Trump on a four-year term with Ryan as VP and nominee in four years."
Joseph Rago: "Seconded."
The motion passed unanimously. The board reached out to Trump, who thought the idea was brilliant. The board reached out to Ryan, who thought the idea was brilliant.
And so the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board believes that it has resolved "the Trump Issue." And saved the Republican Party. And paved the way for a defeat of Hillary Clinton in the general.
